Attempt is very sour, but the result is sweet
- written by Sam Nang Chong, Cambodia -
If you want to study, you have to pay for education. If you want to earn money, you have to find a job. If you go working in a job, you can not help your parents on the rice fields, and if you want to get a good job to help your parents with money, you have to be educated.
The vicious circle in Cambodia is barely to avoid. Like many Khmer say: You get the result of the life you lived before, and that's why you're life is like this." These attitude is very common in whole South East Asia and related to the Buddhism.
But there are young Khmer pitting themselves against the forces of tradition, religion and mentality. They try to find a way outside the misery, what means to have a hard life. But it works out with a mélange of hope and confidence: "Attempt is very bitter, sour, hot. But the result, that we get is very, very sweet."
